The mind of a boss.
An “EVERYTHING I SAY IS IMPORTANT” Production
We have all come to know and love both Dynasty Five and Dynasty Six as a fairly decent source of entertainment. Trades have been made, games have been played, and championships have been won. But, much work goes on behind the scenes for us common folk to enjoy this wonderful world of simulation basketball. The main source of that work comes from the man behind the plan, the Boston Celtics. He is the best British GM this league has ever seen, and our staff caught up with him a little earlier to ask him a few questions.
The Boston Celtics’ answers will appear in italics.
Q: First off, I would like to thank you for joining me on this interview today. We may as well jump right into the questions. It is not a hidden fact that you yield from the country of England. Being thousands of miles away from any NBA Franchise, what made you decide to not only watch basketball, but to create a simulation league
A: Being British I'm also a fan of football (soccer) and I loved playing football management sims such as 'Championship Manager' and 'Premier Manager'. I'm a much bigger fan of basketball though, and the closest you can come to a management sim with the NBA is Dynasty Mode on the Live series.
For a long time I simmed Dynasty Stories on the NLSC boards (Celtics Dynasty / TWolves Dynasty) but then I discovered an online sim league which lasted about a month. After that short experience, I decided to start my own league and went from there.
Q: Well, it is nice to know that someone in Europe likes basketball more than soccer. Anyway, we have seen a ton of new innovations in Dynasty Six. Do you have any big plans for Dynasty Five this season
A: Either they are a secret, and I'm not telling you them. Or you already know about them
Q: Secretive Maybe not. Let’s move on to an easier subject. The Celtics won the championship in real life, which I am sure you are aware of. You have the exact same team that the Celtics won with in Dynasty Six. Do you think you will be able to win the D6 championship, or do you feel that there is still something missing from your team
A: Well, uhm, I must admit that since I have to test both Division 1 and 2 for bugs whilst I'm editing their files, I occasionally sim through an entire season to make sure things are okay. By doing that, I already know that if all things remain the same from now onwards, I've got a chance of winning the league, because I've technically already seen it happen. Things can change though, teams are improving here every day. San Antonio may need to rectify their point-guard position, but they're looking at a starting 5 featuring Gasol - Duncan - Rashard - Ginobili already!
---
Q: At least it’s good to know that you care about the league by simming through! Let’s say you do need to make a trade to win the championship. What players would you be most interested in sending away from Boston or getting from another team
A: If anyone has already read my trade block, they know I'm not interested in moving Pierce or Garnett. So I suppose, of my big-time players, that just leaves Ray Allen - who I'd prefer to keep too - though I had a quick talk with Denver about a possible swap for Allen Iverson, but he wasn't interested.
When I get the time I'll be looking for some bench players with longer-term contracts than the ones I have. With the cap being $65m still, I'm going to have some trouble re-signing any of my players. If I can secure some long-term contracts on players with a good upside, hopefully some of them will work out in a few years time and I'll still be able to remain in Division 1 whilst re-tooling after the Garnett/Pierce/Allen era.
Q: Well, it appears that you already have a lot of confidence in your team. If you had to find a weakness right now in the Celtics Franchise, what would it be
A: My salary situation. Inflexibility may mean relegation for any club here, although Danny Ainge did a great job in real life, things work differently here at Dynasty Six. Piling-up contracts can only work for so long.
Q: I can definitely relate to you on that one over at D5! Let’s move on to Division 2 for a moment. Every year three teams move up to Division 1, and three teams move down to Division 2. What three teams do you see propelling themselves to the upper division
A: I actually see Miami as a strong contender for Division 2 promotion. The real-life Heat did a great job of tanking in 2007/08 despite still having some quality players on their roster. Also, the Clippers were plagued by injury in real life, but here they're still all healthy. New York and Atlanta should be somewhere near contention too.
Q: Interesting. I wish my Stallions could move up, but I don’t think it will happen this year. Anyway, as a final question, let’s talk about the best of the best. Who do you see as the biggest competition to winning the championship
A: It's too early to tell. It all depends on how each GM reacts to their situation this year. At the moment, all the front-runners are the same as last year's front-runners in real life. But as the season progresses there will, of course, be some surprises. It will be interesting to watch the behaviour of those GMs who linger in the relegation zone towards the end of the season! Some big teams might profit from some panic-trading!
You heard it folks! Straight from the source himself. Thanks for reading, and keep enjoying Boston’s sim leagues!
